Will Your Kids Be Bloggers?
It seems likely they will. Blogging is already darn close to being mainstream, and with the volume of social networks out there, including those geared to young people, it wouldn’t shock me if every kid on the planet had a blog someday.
My son is no exception. He’s almost two and a half.
At dinner I was talking to my wife about blogging. I said the word “blogger” a few times.
My son repeated me and said, “blogger.” (He’s got an amazing vocabulary for his age, don’t ya know! You should hear him say “humongous.” Anyway…)
He said the word twice, then looked at me and said, “I have a blogger in my nose.”
Yup, all the kids are going to be bloggers. And they’ll still be plagued by boogers.

Just wait until they hear something funny at the table and look over at you and say “That’s Bloggable.”
I’m sure it’ll happen sooner rather than later!
I actually recall reading something on Wendy Piersall’s site some time ago (http://www.emomsathome.com where she was talking about her daughter, who asked her not to blog about a conversation they were having.
So there you have it! The kids are scared of their parents blogging!
That’s hilarious! I love it. thanks for sharing a fun story. I just wrote about you on my site today, your site about entrepreneur blogs is a “magic wand tip of the day”, Ben!
I know lots of people who are bloggers that are kids; I am myself… you know, blogging and being 13 and all.
Hopefully in the future a lot more are bloggers, and I’ll be sure you read your kids’ blogs when they make one.
My 10 year old son is a contributor to my Video Game Tips for Tweens site - he’ll take it over this summer when he is on summer break. My other two are very aware of what a blog is and the 8 year old wants to know when she can have one.
I’d place money on it - my kids will blog.
Hmmm I’m not sure I agree. While blogging is going mainstream, I think a lot of amateurs are realizing it isn’t worth doing if you’re not serious about it. I think it will become less of a fad and more of an alternative for serious writers.
Of course, your kid I’d expect be a natural born blogger.
I think my thoughts on the subject fall in line with John Wesley’s comments. I believe most kids might start a blog because it’s the “in-thing” to do but will lose interest quickly unless they get lots of traffic from day one or start making money. I have kids of my own and I hate to admit it, but they don’t have the longest attention span nor do they have much in the way of patience. Getting started with blogging takes time. Few, if any, are overnight sensations.
Ben, your son’s comment made milk come out my nose! Priceless!
I agree with John W. and Bret - it will be the “in thing” for a while, but when they find out how much work it is, they’ll move on to whatever the next “in thing” is. It’s like keeping diaries - some do it easily, some can’t keep it up. We’re sure to get some great and thoughtful writers out it, though, so in the long run, the world will grow.
Actually they will all be walking around with an R2D2 that will record their lives.
I like how a funny post has turned into a discussion. Kudos folks! Kids and blogging - truth be told I hope all kids aren’t blogging. They should be outside exercising…
Although an R2D2 unit would be cool!
Interesting timing on this post, the company that I work for is looking to have a teen blog on their site (a local newspaper). I think it is a great opportunity for teens to get involved with the community and in this case with a reputable site. I haven’t heard the details yet, but I imagine they will initially target local high schools for students that are interested in journalism to participate.
Robert we need to chat! We have a teachers teaching teachers program for schools. It helps them learn about social media.
That’s a good idea Jim! I’m pretty excited about the use of blogs that we are going to have. There will be some single person blogs (like the editor and such) and they are planing a parenting blog, the teen blog and a few others as well as related forums.
I have 3 teens myself and I really think social media will be a big part of their lives.
