It makes it easier and easier for people to stand out and really build up their own profile. If you’re competing with them for a job, and you’re not as actively developing your personal brand, you’re in trouble. Of course the same holds true for employers.

Great post! I think with the ease at which everyone can get a website up and running and greater competition for market share, branding will continue to play a bigger role. Being able to stand out from the crowd to some segment of the market will be the key to success.

Without that all important image, you don't have much of a company. Consumer confidence comes from warm leads and a constant presence in the marketplace. Get your image out there!

I am a big believer in branding. Take a look at Apple - who would have thought that would be a common household name? The same can be done for a person. Hannah Montana is a good example of personal branding even though it is an alias.

Hi Ben,

I agree with you on the importance of personal branding. Of course, it's a two-edged approach - the more you publicize your name and the work that you do, the more people will actually evaluate the merits of your work. People will know instantly if you do quality work or a patched-up job. Like some of the guys who left their comments here, my difficulty is getting traction in offline personal branding to complement my online effort. Thanks for this thought-provoking article.

Yes, I strongly believe that personal branding can play an important role in a person's success, especially if they are in a business like real estate, where your name is everything. Many home business guru's and internet marketing guru's have also done quite well through personal branding.

Thanks for all the comments!

@Zac: Blogging is a great start. Networking in-person is probably the best thing you can do. It builds confidence and ensures that you don't get stuck behind a computer permanently focusing on the big world. Sometimes focusing on the "small, local" world is key.
