Ben,

Oh so true. There is a true saying in marketing that it costs much more to find new customers than to gain more business from existing customers. If you keep in contact with your customers on a regular basis they will be more than happy to recommend you to others. I have won enormous amounts of business in the past with this approach. The key is to listen. Put right things that they are unhappy with quickly - never believe that your product or service is perfect because it isn't. Thanks for the post.

Graham Bowall

I started my career in sales 12 years ago (Gosh has it been that long?) selling Reuters information services to stock brokers. I had to work hard for my first sale - took me three months. But I made damn sure the client was happy.

I spent another month ensuring his service was up and running smoothly. Thinking long term really paid off. In the next two months, I was the star salesman with record sales. This client was so happy with me that he just picked up the phone and practically asked them to subscribe to the service. All I had to do was walk into their respective offices and pick up the orders.

I learnt a very valuable lesson then - that I still follow to this day. Make sure you take care of your customers and they will take care of you.

You just reminded me that one of the places I fall down is with my clients months later. I do sometimes, but not always and not in any regular intervals. That will change. Thanks for the reminder
