Gilad – Why Won’t You Let Me Contact You About Your Plugin Yes-WWW?

During the most recent open mic session at Successful Blog I was asking the participants about some problems I’m having with Technorati. In the midst of that, Joe at Working at Home on the Internet suggested I try the WordPress plugin yes-www.

The plugin redirects all non “www” requests to “www” — so if you typed “http://instigatorblog.com” it would redirect to “http://www.instigatorblog.com”.

Great, I thought. Let me give that a try. So I downloaded the plugin, activated it and tested it. Seemed to work very well.

Today I noticed a couple weird things in WordPress Admin, and it took me a bit of time to realize it was the plugin. Two problems occured:

  1. The “Dashboard” link in WordPress Admin was redirecting to the main page of the site.
  2. The “Main Index Template” link in the Presentation area of WordPress Admin wasn’t working at all.

I think it has to do with the way the plugin is trying to redirect requests to “index.php”. So I’ve deactivated it.

Then I decided to email the author of the plugin to let him know about the problem. Gilad Gafni has a good looking blog called You on Top (great name!) but oddly there’s absolutely no way to contact Gilad on his blog.

  • NO email address.
  • NO contact form.
  • NO commenting allowed.

All I’m able to do is link to his blog post to give him a trackback, in the hopes that he sees that and gets in touch with me.

Why wouldn’t Gilad want me to get in touch?

To me, it makes no sense. In this case I have a technical issue with his plugin, tomorrow I might have a great opportunity for him.

Now, one caveat — if you go directly to his main site there’s a contact form there, but I shouldn’t have to do that, especially when there’s no link from his blog to the main business site (I just took an educated guess as to the URL).

I’m not trying to pick on Gilad, but it strikes me as strange that in today’s world of ultra-connectivity and opportunity that it’s still so hard to reach out and touch someone. Who doesn’t want to be touched by little old me?

If you enjoyed this post, please share it!

Thanks, Ben. I use the same plugin and have the same issues you mentioned. I never associated the two. I usually edit my blog locally and upload the changed files, and never use the dashboard for anything.

Rick – glad I could help. I was just about to post something in WordPress support when I figured it out.

When I saw the comment come in on my email I thought it might be Gilad…think he’ll get in touch?

Sorry to get your hopes up, Ben. I don’t think he’ll be in contact, though I hope I’m wrong. He’s only had one post on his blog since he published this plugin, and that was in July. And I didn’t see anything about it in the WordPress forums.

Rick — looks like you’re right, but I also found out that Gilad is involved with b5media (http://www.b5media.com) which is a blog network. Liz (http://www.successful-blog.com) is also a member there.

So I might try and reach out through b5media to see if they have an email address for Gilad. We’ll see!

Rick (& Ben), sorry about the inconvenience… There was no attempt to ignore the public here, nor to instigate any conspiracy theories. Closing comments on that particular posr was a mere mistake… Sorry.
Anyways, I corrected the problem you’ve mentioned that caused the endless redirection loop when attempting to edit the “Main Index Template” via the “Theme Editor”. The updated version is now posted at the original post (ver.0.30).
PS. I’ve added a contact form to my blog…

Gilad — thanks for taking notice. I had a feeling you would.

I tried the download link at your blog but it’s still version 0.20. I’ve emailed you with the details so hopefully I can get the latest version and give it a whirl.

    Thanks.

Does anyone know the name of the wordpress plugin that creates a list of your posts in a category instead of just displaying them one after the other? I want it so that when someone clicks on a category they just get a list of posts from that category.

I'm sure Ive seen one…and sifting through the WP site is a nightmare

Hugo – I don't think you need a plugin for that. Most WordPress templates list categories in the sidebar. Clicking on a category will show a list of posts within that category. If the template you're using doesn't support that it's a question of writing a bit of PHP code in there.

    Hugo,

Listing the posts in a category is actually not a standard thing included in templates. There is a quick hack for it here http://wordpress.org/support/topic/69799.

PS. Make sure to backup your template before making changes though…

What I want to do on my blog, is every few hours take the oldest post and move it to the
front of the queue, all automatically. Anyone know if there is a plugin that can do this or
a simple way to set up another plugin to do this (use my own feed perhaps)?
    Thanks.
