A Brief Story About Me in the Financial Post

September 16, 2008

I recently completed an interview with Rick Spence at the Financial Post about startups, my background, blogging, etc. It was a lot of fun and the end result can be found here:

A standout among movers and shakers

As much as I appreciate that title, I think the subtitle is more relevant, Learning curve of a tech blogger turned CEO.

Of course the learning curve is endless – and so it should be. If you stop learning stuff while on the job, I’d say you’re in trouble.

Rick asked me a lot of interesting questions and we had a great chat. We covered some of my history as a software / Web entrepreneur, how and why I got into blogging (it was entirely strategic), and a brief overview of Standout Jobs, how it was born and the lessons learned. Standout Jobs has been around for about one and a half years and it’s been a period of insane learning and growth for me. One would hope (and expect!) that not to change.

    Nice one mate! Well done!
I haven't read the interview is there anywhere i can read it?
  • great post and interview, its a real inspiration and being financial sound is very gratifying and relieves a lot of uneeded stress.
  • Congrats on the press. Of course the learning curve is endless and it something I have sometimes struggled to find time in my daily schedule, though I realize it's neccessary. If you can commit 30 minutes of your work day into educating yourself on some of the latest technology trends, it could prove to be the key ingredient to growing your business.
  • I read your interview I think you did a great job, good luck
  • Congrats, thats a very good post
  • Very impressive. Congrats!
  • Congratulations. You are an inspiration to a lot of people I'm sure. Great job on all you've done.
  • Congratz for the success, it must be very cool to get featured on a newspaper ;p
  • Your right about the learning curve, I think there are times when we tend to get into this rhythm and not learn anything new and be stuck and that is not safe at all.

We need to update ourselves all the time and that way we can have more of a rounded thinking.
  • Belief is the beginning of a successful life. Persistent learning will consolidate the belief. Solid belief will help to ignore all the hardships on your way of life, to take all difficulties and failures as a motivator or lubricant; persistent learning will help people get over all the worries and difficulties. :)
  • I think a stop in the learning curve of a CEO would probably result in a directly linked stop in the evolution of a company. There is no point (to my knowledge), where you can have learned everything there is to know about your buisiness, ever.
  • That is Realy cool. I would love to get myself on a newspaper And More.... :) :)
  • Great writeup. Congrats!
  • Thanks for sharing. We just have to keep to our dreams.
  • Well done Ben - great to get recognition - good work.
  • Well, that looks like another job board. Not a bad idea. Even Craigslist is starting to charge people to post jobs in some areas like New York. I think I will give it a look.
  • Congratulations.
Any insight on what this $5000 product will be? :)
  • Ben,well done on the coverage. where next on your own growth? and do you associate growth with increase capital etc? Thanks Rob
  • great job! I wish to have that kind of success..more power!:)
  • Hey,
"If you stop learning stuff while on the job, I’d say you’re in trouble."
That is probably one of the wisest quotes I heard. People think that when they finish their education and get a job learning is over. But I for one, disagree, as long as you are willing to learn, you WILL learn.
  • very inspiring story, great one!

  • Congrats Ben! It is an honor to 'know' you through the blogosphere...hard work really does pay off...I hear it all the time from bloggers who become discouraged that their blog isn't making any money or that they are not getting enough traffic. But they don't understand it's all a part of the learning curve.
  • Congrats on the coverage! Did you really find that you're out 60% of the time raising funds?

Good luck with Standout Jobs, it seems like you're doing a great job.
  • Yes, I think that's a fair assessment. You'll find when you raise money that you almost never stop raising more money. So it's an ongoing process. And raising money involves more than just pitching - it includes the preparation, the analysis of your business, packaging things together, networking, etc. It's a very time consuming and challenging process.
  • That is way cool. I would love to get myself on a newspaper. You should really be proud of yourself.
  • Ben, congrats on the recent press. It well deserved!
